Do you know how to use social media for your business?

I've had a few people tell me, "I have people inviting me to twitter...but I just don't get how I'm going to use it to grow my business?"

You really have to respect a business owner that doesn't blindly jump in, that takes the time to ask how to use social media for their business.

The magic answer is that there is no magic answer.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is not one approach that works for everybody.

However, there are a few general rules that can help you understand how to approach social media.

1) At the basic level, social media / social networking is just another form of networking. You are going to tailor your conversation to the group of people around you... and hopefully, you are taking the time to asses 'which' group is the best use of your time.

2) At a recent seminar, Peter Shankman summed it up pretty well "If 'it' will offend a preacher, parent, or boss... Don't post it!"

3) Take the time to listen to relevant people before you jump into the conversation. Use the search feature in whatever media you choose, to find people who are talking about your product or your industry. Are they consumers? Competition? or Complimentary businesses?

4) You have to understand 'WHO' your customers are and 'WHY' you are relevant to them. Always... Always... Always... start with the end in mind. Who do you want to reach? And why should they listen to or care about you?

Watch, listen and learn... and realize that you are goint to make mistakes as you learn how to use social media. If you get in over your head, there are plenty of people who are more than willing to help out.
