New PR and Social Media

As public relations professionals, we have been used to being an information gatekeeper. A big part of what we do is build relationships with media representatives that can get our clients' news out.

With social media, the face of news is changing. Journalism is no longer left to newspapers and nightly news. It is in the hands of citizen journalists and bloggers. It is in the hands of every day people through word of mouth buzz.

So, the evolution of New PR and Social Media...

"New PR is to get other people to spread the word for you," said Peter Shankman, Founder of the Geek Factory.

Now, in addition to journalists, public relations professionals have to know how to reach influential bloggers. They have to tweet, friend, digg, stumbleon, miglestick, poken and optimize your news for social media networks.

Sending a press release is not enough. You can blast information out all day long, but the true value is in getting people to engage with you and tell all of their friends just how cool you are.

As a business owner, this is good news for you. It is a higher level of accountability for your public relations efforts... It also means that you can AND should participate in your own branding.

As a public relations professional, I can say New PR and Social Media open up so many doors and possibilities. It is unchartered territory that helps keep us on our toes - creatively representing you.

So, why would people spread the word for you?
