While it is easier to get maximum coverage in minimal time with digital media, the skill of crafting the right message for the right medium is even more critical.

The rise of social media has indeed changed how PR practitioners communicate. With the public on their smartphones and on the net, information dissemination is quick and instantaneous. So errors get the same instantaneous feedback.

So what are the changes brought about by this digitized and mobilized era to good old public relations? The tables below show how getting heard and being seen have been revved up by the electronic superhighway.

Tapping into Generation V
It would be foolish to disregard the impact or the influence of the Gen V (Virtual Generation). Instead of organizing a cocktail launching party for the media and press people, you only need to target the lurking pool of your market (Social Media? Online news? Forums?) and make the appropriate splash.

At the end of the day, what really matters is the message that you convey. Were you able to send the message effectively? And did you reach the right people? It is not a choice between tradition and digital media. It is incorporating both for a successful media relations strategy.

Digital media has great advantages in that it's cost effective and reaches more people (if you know where to fish). But nothing still beats shaking someone’s hand and engaging in conversation.
