How to stay connected with your grandparents via social media

What is the Silent Generation? There are almost 50 million Americans in this generation. These are the people born between 1925-1945, now aged 66-86. Most of them are retired or near retirement. There are some who are still working, but not as many hours as their younger counterparts, working as consultants, managers, aging partners. Having grown up during the Depression, this generation is hardworking and know how to cherish their jobs. However, they are not the most technologically savvy, preferring to deal with people face-to-face.

Grandparents vs Social Media
While it is still rare thing to see your grandparents calling you via Skype or texting to ask what time your plane arrives, studies show that our grandparents are quickly catching on and getting updated on web communication. It was reported in News Feed Time that there was a 100% growth in social networking site usage – from 13% in 2009 to 26% in 2010.

Staying Connected
For those grandparents who belong to the non-techy part of the pie, here are three things you need to teach them about connecting through the internet.

Sending texts
It is best that they handle the most user-friendly mobile in the market today. After giving them the rough run through, set shortcuts in their phone so that they are able to send texts and photos by just a couple of clicks.

Connecting on Facebook
Set up their Facebook account for them and show them the basic ropes. When they find that they can keep abreast of you and your kids' latest photos, they will no doubt embrace this with enthusiasm.

Connecting on Skype
The magic word for this is web cam. Knowing that they will now be able to see their kids and grandkids while talking to them, they will be Skyping you more often than you would have thought possible.

This generation is at the twilight of their lives. And they crave news from their children and grandchildren who now have their own lives. With a few tips from you, social media can be the bridge that connects them to their fast-paced families. Of course, your grandparents will never turn into techie monsters. So, just use these tools to supplement your relationship and don’t forget about the hugs, advice and face-to-face time.
