You VS [You]™
marking the difference between a branded and non-branded you
Picture two executives with the same qualifications, same years of service, same skill-set. But one gets the promotion while the other gets left behind. If you've been in the same situation and have asked the right question, then you are ready to discover [You]. But what is the right question? It's not “Why did he get promoted and I didn't?” The more productive question to ask is: “How do I become the person who gets the promotion?” A person with a solid brand will have reached three realizations by the time he transitions from being a YOU to a [YOU]. It is easy to spot the difference. Self-awareness A branded [You] is aware of his own capabilities and strengths – both from his own and from other people's perspective. It is not enough to know that you are good at public speaking, you should find out if your peers think that you are good at it. This is one way of measuring your capabilities. Get feedback, listen to criticism, learn from it.
Confidence Knowing your strengths will make you confident in what you can do, creating much-needed opportunities. These do not always come in the form of promotions or special assignments where you can prove yourself. Spot the opportunities for further growth and learning while honing your skills. Volunteer for tasks. Put your best foot forward in any project. Do not be afraid to try new things. It is an opportunity to be good at something new. Ready for change A branded [You] is ready to move forward. Most of the time success is hindered by a penchant for avoiding change, getting too comfortable with the status quo. Finding your brand means being open to change, even craving it. Because you know what you can do and what you can achieve, change will be a requisite. Taking risks gives you at least a 50% chance of succeeding.
