A buyer moving to Collier County opens ChatGPT and asks for a trusted agent in Naples who knows the waterfront condo market. The answer comes back in seconds with two or three names. It feels like the AI simply knows. It doesn’t. Before it answered, the assistant reached for sources it already trusted, and those sources decided whose name came up.

In July we covered the foundation of this shift in How to Become the Agent AI Recommends in Naples and Southwest Florida: a consistent identity, a strong Google Business Profile, and content shaped like real questions. That work makes you legible to AI. This article covers the second half of the equation: what the AI is actually reading when it decides you are worth naming. The question is getting attention across the industry, too. HousingWire ran a feature this week asking whether agents’ names come up when clients turn to ChatGPT for a recommendation (HousingWire, 2026).

AI recommendations are earned, not bought

The clearest data on this comes from Muck Rack, the media database and PR software company, which has been tracking what generative AI cites since 2025. Its May 2026 report analyzed more than 25 million links cited by ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Earned media accounted for 84 percent of those citations. Paid and advertorial content accounted for 0.3 percent (Muck Rack, 2026a). The earned share has held between 82 and 89 percent across every edition of the study, and the Institute for Public Relations reached the same conclusion in its independent review of the findings (Institute for Public Relations, 2026).

For an agent in Naples or Bonita Springs, the takeaway is blunt. Sponsored posts, paid placements, and portal ads are nearly invisible to the systems now shaping first impressions. What AI trusts is what someone else chose to say about you.

Journalism carries extra weight on the questions that matter

Not all earned media is weighted equally. Journalism made up 27 percent of all AI citations in the Muck Rack study, and the company notes that news coverage has consistently landed between 20 and 30 percent across its research. The share jumps when people ask about what is happening in an industry. For those trend-style questions, AI cited journalism in 46 percent of responses, more than twice the rate for how-to or comparison questions. In the real estate sector specifically, journalism accounted for 24.6 percent of citations (Muck Rack, 2026a).

Think about the questions seasonal residents and relocating families actually ask. What is changing for condo owners on Marco Island? Which Naples neighborhoods are drawing young families? Who should I talk to about selling before season? Those are trend questions, and the answers lean on reporting. An agent quoted in a local business publication, interviewed on a regional TV segment, or cited as a source in a community feature is handing AI exactly the material it prefers. We explored how agents earn that kind of coverage in How Local Media Coverage Builds Authority for Southwest Florida Real Estate Agents and in our piece on becoming the agent reporters call first.

Coverage has a shelf life

Here is the detail most agents miss. AI favors recent reporting. Among journalism citations with known publish dates, 57 percent were published within the previous 12 months, a slight acceleration from the prior edition of the study (Muck Rack, 2026a).

That changes how earned media has to work. A flattering profile from three years ago may still hang framed in your office, but it is quietly losing weight in the systems buyers now consult. One big feature followed by silence is not a strategy. A steady rhythm of credible mentions, spread across the year and across Collier County outlets, keeps your name in the pool of sources AI considers current. Channels like local podcast guesting help fill the gaps between traditional news hits.

Why a press release alone will not get you there

It is tempting to assume that publishing more press releases solves the problem. The data says otherwise. Press releases made up just 1.1 percent of AI citations in the latest study, down from 6 percent in the December 2025 edition (Muck Rack, 2026a).

Releases still have a job. They are often the starting point for the coverage AI does trust. In Muck Rack’s 2026 survey of journalists, 86 percent said at least some of their stories began with a PR pitch, while 88 percent said they immediately disregard pitches that miss their beat (Muck Rack, 2026b). In other words, the pitch matters only if it reaches the right reporter with an angle that reporter actually covers. Blasting announcements into the void produces neither coverage nor citations.

Where the real work happens

This is where most capable agents stall. Earning steady, relevant coverage requires knowing which reporters in Naples, Bonita Springs, and Marco Island cover which beats, shaping timely story angles that serve their readers rather than your listings, preparing you to give a clean quote under deadline, and then connecting every placement back to your personal brand and online reputation so AI sees one consistent expert everywhere it looks. Done once, it is a nice moment. Done consistently, it becomes a durable advantage.

That is the work C2 Communications does every week. We build the earned media layer that sits on top of the AI-ready foundation, planning a year-round calendar of story opportunities, managing media relationships across Southwest Florida, and making sure each placement compounds rather than fades. You focus on clients. We make sure the sources AI reads keep telling the right story about you.

The agents AI names next year are earning coverage now

The agents who will dominate AI recommendations in Collier County a year from now are not the ones with the biggest ad budgets. They are the ones whose names keep appearing in credible, current, independent reporting. That window is still open, largely because most agents have not connected PR to AI visibility yet.

If you want to know what AI is reading about you today, and what it should be reading instead, let’s talk. Book a complimentary discovery call and we will map out the earned media plan that puts your name in the answer.
